About the Minot Sertoma Club

Since 1959, the Minot Sertoma Club has donated more than $1 million to the Minot community and area. The Minot Sertoma Club, with the ultimate purpose of meeting the needs of the community through service, has a membership of over 50 civic leaders committed to making a difference and giving back to our community.

The Minot Sertoma (SERvice TO MAnkind) Club’s two large fundraisers are the Seltzer and Beerfest and Christmas in the Park.

The Seltzer and Beerfest is held each fall and has grown to more than 400 attendees. This is the perfect opportunity to have a taste of an IPA or sour beer and try the newest seltzer flavors to hit the market. There are more than 20 different varieties of craft beers and seltzers to sample, along with food, music, games and raffle items. This night doesn’t disappoint and has brought in more than $10,000 per year to the club.

Christmas in the Park is held annually from the day after Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve. This is as much fun for the club as it is for those who take a drive through the park to see the beautifully lighted displays. Sertoma members work hard for months to create new displays, set them up in the park and “man” the hut to greet those who drive through. This event is one that hundreds of people in the area look forward to each year and brings in about $60,000 each year.

Through these fundraisers, Minot Sertoma Club has been able to give back to the community in various ways, including:

·    STEAM T-ball League sponsor

·    Pediatric waiting room at the new Trinity Hospital

·   Minot Youth Baseball Complex

·   ND Center for Persons with Disabilities

·   Dreamcatchers Baseball group

  • Minot Family YMCA
  • Keith White Sertoma Softball complex
  • MSU Dome (walking/running track)
  • MAYSA Arena
  • Hands & Voices Hearing Aid Loaner Bank
  • Minot State University Foundation
  • Induction Loop at Ann Nicole Nelson Hall, the MSU Amphitheater and Burning Hills Amphitheater in Medora

In addition, the Minot Sertoma Club has funded yearly scholarships in Speech and Hearing studies at Minot State University, as well as purchasing sound systems and hearing equipment for local classrooms.

The Minot Sertoma Club works hard but we do have fun! We have a monthly evening social in the summer months and everyone is invited to bring a guest. We have gained some valuable members through our social events.

It’s through the generosity of our event sponsors and participants that we’re able to give back and make our community a better place to live.

Sertoma Club was founded in 1912 by three Kansas City, MO, businessmen and a newspaper publisher who enticed community leaders to “get involved.” Now in its second Century of Service, Sertoma community leaders are engaged in improving the quality of life in communities by making a difference for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Join us! It’s fun!

The Minot Sertoma Club meets each Monday at noon (with the exception of holidays) at the Sleep Inn & Suites for a one-hour luncheon and presentation. The cost to join is $125 per quarter. If you’re interested in knowing more about the Sertoma Club, please join us for a Monday meeting, email us at minotsertomaclub@gmail.com or contact the Club President, Jenny Castro at jenny.castro@kmot.com.

Minot Sertoma brings induction looping to MSU

The Minot Sertoma Club, along with matching funds from the Minot Area Community Foundation, has completed a project to loop Ann Nicole Nelson Hall at Minot State University. Anyone with a hearing aid or assistive hearing device that supports tele-coil mode (T-coil mode) is able to use the system. If you would like to take advantage of the increased clarity and amplification that this system provides, we suggest asking your audiologist for more information. Below is a story that KX News did on Al Larson, a longtime member of Minot Sertoma. Full story at KX News.

MINOT SERTOMA CLUB PLEDGES $100,000 TO MSU FOUNDATION
Continuing a tradition of supporting Minot State University speech and hearing efforts, Mylan Sand, Minot Sertoma Club president, presented $28,000 to Marv Semrau, MSU vice president for advancement, on May 19. Minot Sertoma Club pledged $100,000 to the MSU Development Foundation to enhance the Minot Sertoma Club Scholarship fund and to fund equipment in the Department of Communication Disorders. The check is the first installment of that commitment.

“With this $28,000 gift, Minot Sertoma continues to assist students in attaining their education towards speech and hearing careers,” Semrau said. “This contribution brings the endowment, from which annual scholarships are awarded, to over $200,000.”
In addition to the donation, the Minot Sertoma Club awarded four scholarships, totaling $7,000, for the 2014-15 academic year to Kelsey Schiele, Courtney Johnson, Jorden Brown and Katelyn Larson.

In 1989, the Minot Sertoma Club established the Minot Sertoma Club Scholarship to provide scholarships to MSU students majoring in communication disorders and deaf education.

The Minot Sertoma Club has a 54-year history of Service to Mankind in the Minot area. It has a mission of supporting speech and hearing projects, youth-related projects and national heritage efforts. Its primary fundraisers are a Norsk Høstfest car raffle, Beer Fest and Christmas in the Park, an annual light display in Oak Park from Thanksgiving through Dec. 31. On May 4, Minot Sertoma Club raised over $12,000 at its Celebrate Sound Walk.

For questions about the donation, contact Semrau at marv.semrau@minotstateu.edu.

Minot Sertoma Club Donates $36,000 to MSU Foundation

Continuing a tradition of supporting Minot State University speech and hearing efforts, the Minot Sertoma Club contributed $36,000 today (March 20) to the MSU Development Foundation. The donation will fund the purchase of new voice lab equipment for the Department of Communication Disorders and enhance the Minot Sertoma Club Scholarship fund.

“The digital equipment donated by the Minot Sertoma club offers MSU students high-quality, advanced technology for comprehensive vocal assessment,” said Lisa Roteliuk, communication disorders instructor. “The equipment offers a recording system which will enhance clinical efficiency and reporting of findings. The equipment will be utilized for student learning, in-clinic patient assessments and research purposes.”

In 1989, the Minot Sertoma Club established the Minot Sertoma Club Scholarship to assist MSU communication disorders students. Twenty years ago, the local service club purchased voice lab evaluation equipment for the department. State-of-the-art technology then was analog, today it is digital. With today’s donation, the club’s total donation to MSU is approximately $175,000.

“We are extremely grateful for Sertoma’s support of our speech-language pathology program. This generous donation will allow us to once again have the latest technology available to train students and to serve clients in our on-campus clinic,” said Leisa Harmon, communication disorders department chair.

“With this $20,000 gift, we are pleased to enhance the Minot Sertoma Club Scholarship fund that is dedicated to assisting students advancing their education towards speech and hearing careers. This contribution brings the endowment to over $90,000 from which annual scholarships are awarded,” said Connie Feist, Minot Sertoma Club president. “We are also proud to announce an additional $16,000 gift, which will be used to purchase voice lab equipment used within the communication disorders department. This will upgrade equipment that is used as learning tools and benefits the entire speech-and-hearing community.”

The Minot Sertoma Club has a 53-year history of Service to Mankind in the Minot area. It has a mission of supporting speech and hearing projects, youth-related projects and national heritage efforts. Its primary fundraisers are a Hostfest car raffle, Beer Fest and Christmas in the Park, an annual light display in Oak Park from Black Friday through Dec. 31.
